Per contra, by definition, means: in contrast, on the contrary.

Duality comes in multitudes. One is not inherently the opposite of the other. The concept of contrast allows one to be examined in the gray area of comparison. Juxtaposing the same objects in different environments to contextualize the idea of contrast. We are presenting a medium that allows for objects to be seen in a dual multitude, presenting the idea that duality exists only through the action of examining things per contra.

per contra is a 100-page photobook created with two sides. Always thinking in multitudes, the physical book features side 1 (glossy) and side 2 (matte). Complete with two covers. Each editorial is named after a common superstition, and features highlighted letters that you can put together to decipher the theme of issue 02.

Ottolinger: Uncomfortable Identities

People like to feel comfortable. We want to push people to their boundaries and make them think about topics they would usually avoid, in this case, how self-perception intersects with fashion. The feeling of vulnerability and discomfort is often felt but never discussed in length, presenting Ottolinger with the opportunity to take on the challenge of starting this uncomfortable conversation. The plurality of “identities” refers to the multiple perceptions one may have depending on the time and place, offering multiplicity to the concept.

seeing red.

The Creative School Fashion Communication Capstone Project

“seeing red.” is a 60-page editorial book that outlines the connection between fashion, nostalgia and the 90s. Inspired by my own nostalgia for a decade I never first-handly experienced, “seeing red.” is a culmination of academic research and visual content to juxtapose the pivotal events of the 90s with my own nostalgized perspective as a creative. Focusing on three overarching trends: grunge, globalization and realism, I hope to encapsulate the zeitgeist of how each of these phenomena outlines this revolutionary decade and how they have manifested into the modern fashion industry we know today. As a creative, looking for inspiration is one of the most integral parts of crafting a personal, creative identity and perspective. Nostalgia is almost always consciously or subconsciously a factor in all creatives’ processes, as it was in mine through the conception of “seeing red.” Through the use of layout design, typography, analogue elements, academic research and photography, “seeing red.” is the culmination of my academic research and creative output in depicting how I use my own nostalgia to craft my creative identity.

nostalgia of the 90s fashion zeitgeist

The Creative School Fashion Communication Project

This fashion film and photo series resonates with the themes and trends associated with my capstone project surrounding fashion and nostalgia of the 1990s. The trends I am focusing on in my capstone include grunge, realism photography and globalization. Grunge as an aesthetic was a pivotal time in fashion where the deconstruction of highly glamourized ideals was being sent down high-fashion runways and caused a reaction of pure shock in the industry. Coinciding with the grunge revolution, the introduction of realism photography was being juxtaposed with the grunge aesthetic to showcase a paradox as to what had previously been seen on the pages of Vogue. This revolution was catapulted into international media due to the expanding communication and globalization in the 1990s. Through this video format, I interpreted the techniques of realism photography whilst showcasing a grunge aesthetic and nostalgic cinematography. As a fashion creative, reproducing the zeitgeist of 90s fashion editorials and media in my own work allows me, as the interpreter, to draw inspiration based on nostalgia, a key revelation of my capstone as to how nostalgia is and can be used as inspiration.
